Chadha Ranch reconfigures a Nashville home with geometric flow and custom elements

Wing of Warmth

New York–based firm Chadha Ranch cut its teeth on retail and hospitality projects grounded in form and a sense of place since its founding in 2018. For House of Waris Botanicals, the studio salvaged wood from the classic New York townhouse. For a recent cafe in Seattle, re-milled old growth Douglas Fir structures the interior with local materials. At The500, Chadha Ranch brings these same principles to its first residential commission. The renovation of a wing of a Nashville home continues the burgeoning studio’s geometric and site-specific approach.

But first: layout. The architects were tasked with reconfiguring the 1,000-square-foot wing to improve the flow. To do so the architects oriented the wing into a series of rooms, anchored by an octagonal parlor. This cleverly makes space for a bathroom, office, and bedroom, incorporating rhythm as well as surprising forms to encounter along the way. It also neatly tucks a laundry room in between a tight, angular nook.

The spaces are united by thoughtful materiality. Underfoot, native red oak floors flow in and out of spaces, save the bathroom. The grain is echoed in the trim, casings, and millwork. The exposed pattern and warm tone lend the space a sense of history and Southern hospitality.

The office continues the design of the parlor with its walls lined in Spanish White. A wall of floor-to-ceiling millwork commands the space. This built-in extends from the wall with a trundle and daybed, surrounded by ample storage space and a sloped top shelf, adding subtle geometry of the space. A 413 Cab Chair by Mario Bellini for Cassina offers seating for the Enzo Mari desk.

In the next room, Bauwerk limewash takes over the walls. It drenches the bedroom in texture, emphasized by the room’s sparse furnishings. A dresser continues the wood grain motif. Another Mario Bellini chair ties this room to the previous. Paired with a lacy sconce sourced from eastern Europe, the design is soft and cozy yet not precious.

In the bathroom, the limewash continues, but pattern and geometry get bolder here. Honed Sand porcelain floors add contrast to the material palette, in addition to the matte Arancio terra-cotta that lines the shower. The pièce de résistance, though, is the trapezoidal double vanity designed by the studio and realized in custom oxide-green concrete by Luke Works. Each circular sink is recessed into the vanity with space to accommodate hands. The funkier form lends the space a geometric twist while also working with the angled wall and tricky floorplan.

Chadha Ranch’s The500 achieves a quiet yet lived-in domesticity. Finished with the client’s art collection, the design neatly translates the firm’s commercial experience to the residential.
