For Miami’s Matsuyoi, Modellus Novus turns a compact space into a seductive Japanese hideaway

Moonlit Menu

Matsuyoi, designed by Modellus Novus for restaurateurs Lisa Limb, Taka Sakaeda, and Jihan Lee (and investor Pharrell Williams)—fills the space above Miami’s Nami Nori. The firm, which also worked on the previous restaurant, designed this second-level outpost by looking at the work of wood-block artist Hasui Kawase, specifically his intent on capturing seductive moonlit evenings on Japan’s seaside.

As such, the finishes, details, and lighting are dark and moody with a hint futuristic. The shou sugi ban wood and black terra-cotta tiles in the bar express deep, mysterious qualities while aiming to complement the chef’s counter, which is covered in dark stone and features moss-green stools. Saturated hues and lighting decorate the space in place of excess decor, from the blue-tinted lights that frame the bar to the dark green private dining area, lit with a moonlike glow on the wall. This restrained palette makes the small restaurant feel elevated and open.
