Jakob Sprenger and AZA Studio translate Wall Street’s art deco style to Aesop’s new New York outpost

Regal Retail

Aesop store on Wall Street

Cult-favorite hair, body, and skin care brand Aesop’s retail spaces are perhaps as beloved as the brand’s scents and lotions. Each store takes on the personalities of its locale without losing touch of the brand’s own identity. For Aesop’s new location in downtown New York, Jakob Sprenger, in collaboration with AZA Studio, references the art deco style of Wall Street’s historic sites, as well as the 37-story Munson Building, where the retail space is located. The result is a lush, immersive interior, which the brand’s outpost are known for, but with a regal twist.

The new outpost, a former lobby space, is defined by tall ceilings and walls clad in Fior di Pesco marble. The renovation continues the grandeur of the building with pilasters that display Aesop’s skin care and fragrances, while crown moldings and a coffered ceiling add to the elegance.

Aesop’s products are as elegantly displayed as the interior. Seven bays of maple wood, patinated brass, and fabric inlay opulently organize offerings, a shelving system that nods to the building’s maritime heritage. It’s all lit by a vintage chandelier to help make the interior look as if it has always been there.
