ROAM Interior Design references Oregon’s forests for the bar at Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences in Portland

A forest-like bar blends luxury and Oregon landscapes by ROAM

This spring, a 460-foot crystalline tower in Portland, Oregon’s Pearl Arts District marked the first 5-star hotel in the city. The building, imagined by GBD Architects, is home to new Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences in Portland, whose interiors were entrusted to ROAM Interior Design. Known previously as HKS Hospitality, ROAM outfitted the 251-room hotel, featuring 207 guest rooms and 44 suites, with a luxurious ode to Oregon’s forest. The hotel’s bar and lounge, Meadowrue, takes this design cue in an even more mystical direction.

Meadowrue begins with a grand staircase, whose irregular steps take after mossy basalt falls of the nearby Mt. Hood. Steps lead to a swanky, nature-inspired bar. Set beneath a canopy of vertical crystals, lighting, and greenery, the bar features a reclaimed Oregon tree trunk with a live-edge table and shimmering green panels. The various vertical elements, which disappear into the glowing cove above, is meant to evoke traversing through the forests among its large trees.

Behind the bar, handmade glass panels and metal mesh create storage and organization for the bar’s beverages and glassware. At the window wall adjacent to the bar, a bespoke wallcovering depicts a gold-flecked forest. It’s activated with vignettes of lounge seating, the focal point being the large communal table made of yet another reclaimed Oregon tree.

ROAM approached Meadowrue in line with the hotel’s overall design language: grounded in a deep investigation into the historical, physical, and social attributes of the area. “What is the unique story of Portland and how do we best express that story through the design? The telling of this story was imagined through the eyes of a couple—two contemporary travelers in search of a modern primitive adventure,” the firm said in a statement. The answer lies in the forest-like wonder of the bar, a bridge that connects the ruggedness of the state with the elegance of the Ritz.
