Fun in Motion

In Austin, Texas, Moogie Pilates recently underwent a rebranding to emphasize the values of the studio: that movement should be fun and pilates is for everyone. To help make this ethos clear spatially, THOUGHTBARN clad the studio’s new space in Hyde Park with color and welcoming curvature.

The new studio is located in a former post office building from the 1960s, occupying a 1,400-square-foot space. Programmatically, the architects organized the space around a curved cube, containing the bathroom, staff room, storage, and private massage room. The reception and area for private and group classes wraps around the cube.

THOUGHTBARN clad the studio in lively color and retro curves. The contour of the cube is covered in a fluted, coral-colored wall, made using vertically installed off-the-shelf crown moldings. The reception desk is tucked within, revealing soft pink plaster.

Across the way, a waiting area is distinguished by a green carpet and furnished with moments of blue, from a slim locker-style storage to a minimalist bench. The area opens up to the main studio space, where rounded mirrors continue the design language even in the more neutral, technical area. The mirror also enables the colors of the cube to reflect back among the reformer machines and steel roof trusses, a relic of the building.

In the cube, the studio’s color palette of pink and blue take over. The hallway is brightened by a cove where a skylight allows natural light into the studio. It connects to the bathroom where bright blue pool tiles dominate the space. It’s finished with a curving, amoeba-like mirror, another reminder of the design’s playful sensibility and fun movement.
